Some riders have the ability to go fast
on any motorcycle, regardless of how the chassis is set up.
For us mere mortals, this is one area that will require some
work. I could write a whole book on this and some have
already. This is a quick guide with general measurements to
prepare you for the track. First you want to set the front and
rear sag. This is the amount the suspension settles with the
bike at rest and the rider and gear in place. Both front and
rear sag should be anywhere from 7/8-inch to 1 1/8-inch.
(22.2mm to 28.5mm) There are different ways to measure sag,
but for first time purposes this will get you started.
Assemble three people (the rider and two
helpers) and top out the rear suspension by lifting the rear
of the bike until the shock is extended. Take a measurement
from two fixed points, usually the rear axle and a mark on the
tail section. Now have the rider, fully outfitted in the gear,
sit on the bike in the racing position with one person holding
the front of the bike. Bounce the suspension several times and
take the measurement again. The difference between the two is
the sag measurement. Adjust spring preload until you get the
desired amount. Repeat the same steps at the front-end with
the person holding the bike standing in the rear. Settings for
the rebound damping and compression will vary on track
conditions and rider preference.
Suspension setup is something that you
just need to play with to understand. If you desire to learn
about suspension, and don’t like to read like me, I suggest
that you get the DVD called “suspension for mortals” You can
order the DVD through Traxxion Dynamics. Just go to
www.traxxion.com and place your order because you are not
going to regret it.
