Tires, Slicks vs. D.O.T.

Most beginning racers or track riders have a common misconception that the use of slicks is necessary to go fast. Actually, GP-compound DOT street-legal tires are better than ever. Some of the best Supersport riders in the world are turning fast laps and winning championships on tires you can use on your Sunday ride. Unless the rider is experienced, most can’t tell the difference between slicks and DOT tires. As the experience level rises, the option of choosing between the different compounds a slick offers can then be used to its potential. The D208GP tire is basically the equivalent of a hard compound slick, but for a street tire, it’s really soft and will be more forgiving. Slicks may have a traction advantage, but for the beginning rider it’s a good idea to get used to pushing the limits of the motorcycle using the DOT tire. Once you get accustomed to how a treaded, street legal tire reacts to corning loads, than the advantage of a slick can be put to better use when the switch is finally made.
